Construction Q & A

with Sarah Johnson and Tom Chiles

In the last issue you saw pictures of the pews as they were being disassembled and stacked up. Since then, the organ pipes have been packed away in wooden crates that workers constructed on the spot. Once the pews and organ apparatus were out of the way, the asbestos flooring was removed from the Sanctuary. This next week the chancel and balcony millwork will be removed, as well as the chancel platform.

I asked Sarah Johnson and Tom Chiles a few questions we might all have about the renovation process. Below is some of the information our friends gave me.

Where did they take the pews?

The pews are being stored in Waco at the warehouse of L. L. Sams, a church furniture manufacturer. They will be brought back when the Sanctuary is completed.

What is happening to the organ?

The organ will stay in a shipping container in a storage facility for about two years, until the PCA church we donated it to finishes its new building. Then the organ will be used again to glorify God.

What is millwork?

Millwork is all of the wood framing around the pipes and chancel area and any additional woodwork in the chancel area or balcony.

Does anything live underneath the chancel platform?

Just plumbing pipes, electrical conduits, and return air vents.

What do Presbyterians do with a baptistry?

Ours will enjoy a more useful life as the new Information Center in the North Hallway.
